As the men so employed obviously have considerable time on their hands, it is not surprising that their excess energy is worked off In what might be considered rather un-naval pursuits. However, not by the wildest, imagination can the activities of Mr. David Tomlmstni's command be thought of as normal, even under "mothball" circumstances, Of course, Mr. Tomhnson is a rather odd person to commanding officer. He is a self-si lo I rocket expert determined lo prove his advances in the misMle lielil exceed those of the Admiralty.

His duty assignment is made in an effort lo unload a difficult problem Mr. Tomhnson is not ithout influence in higher circles parti with the though! of saving the young officer from the hazards of his own haywire experiments and only very remotely because H. M. S. Berkeley hasn't had a skipper in two years.

It would take a lot of the fun out of the story to- tell it in any detail here. It can be mentioned, however, that the crew, under the leadership of an exceptionally enterprising Irish bosun, has continued to draw rations and supplies for the full complement of a ship in fighting trim. There is also nothing to be lost by explaining that the bosun and hi matr not employing loot idle ballast. COLE rev ores foot and Ihe shoes and stockings are piled row on row in the corridors. The scene is wild and frantic, and the hilarity has classic designs.

In practically everything about "The Horse's Mouth" has the face of fantasia. Although th script is episodic, helter-skelter and industriously cluttered, the chaos is ingenious, and the torment of discouragement and frustration hangs over it. Above all. though, the humor prevails, restless and rowdy, in turn droll, disorderly and slapstick, while the satire runs through "The Horse's Mouth" devilishly with a line irreverence for everything that is conventional. Vet yon can see the mask that hides Ihe wtnried face of the passionate artist wondering whether he will ever be secure in a civ il kalion that eves him with mounting distrust and suspicion.

At the same time that "The Horse's Mouth" is banging away at the funny bone, is also dead serious. Fiven the paintings Gully creates are no objects of ridicule but the woik of a first rate English artist Mr. John Bratby. who has earned critical acclaim in knowing circles on both sides of 1he Atlantic. The integrity elsewhere Is obvious, ton.
