The mascots got their feathers ruffled when their hi-jinks during a timeout got out of hand and turned ugly, forcing security guards and cheerleaders to intervene. The squawking began when the Owl glided onto the court with cheerleaders and met the Hawk.

They exchanged good-natured taunts, then began throwing phony punches that somehow escalated into the real thing. The Hawk got his beak bent out of shape, literally, when the Owl hit him too hard and knocked his head off. The headless Hawk proceeded to knock the Owl off his perch, delivering a flurry of solid hits before the fight was broken up. It was mindful of what happened at the Civic Arena about 10 years ago, when members of a Duquesne fraternity assaulted the Hawk, precipitating a near-brawl when St. Joseph's players flocked into the fray.
