II Crowd in jam-packed Dower's Tavern hooted and hollered as a guy led a horse up to the bar. "Set up a beer for my friend : . ." "Who's he votin' . , for? Or Is that one of the candidates . . .?" Just a little election rally frivolity in a campaign where the candi dates will take any pledge but one . . . A mayor's going to be elected the mayor of Beck's Run. Seven very promising candi dates. They'll promise anything , . . ' IT ALL STARTED when Uncle Willie Stadelman died at 82. He was the second mayor of Beck's Run, succeeding the late Skip Marshall ... The guys in Dower's Tavern it was a schoolhouse till 20 years ago didn't want any succession by default or position or anything like that. A real election had to be held . . . So, they're going to have one. Right now it looks like Oct. 5 will be Election Day ... And the seven candidates Jim Finnegan, George Morgan, Doc Linnert, Roy. McGuire, Pete Hanula, Tony Capanzzi and Jimmy Murphyare going all out for votes ... They've got "Vote For . . ." posters up and are putting on parades and corn roasts and all those things that the pro politicians figure are more important than issues. I don't think any of them are shaking hands at 6 a. m. at J&L's Southside mill gate but they're willing to stay at the tavern till closing time seeking that one important vote MARY DOWER, a widow whose husband Howard opened the tavern after the school-house closed, puts up with the guys and their -election. "It helps take their minds off Watergate..." She says the candidates are dead serious about being elected. "This Is' a closely knit little community around here and it's really an honor to have the other fellows pick orf v their mayor. And they're all good fellows..." Each candidate has two campaign managers. And the election rules call for clean campaigning. "The Marquis of Queensbury rules will be adhered to at all times . . ." They're going to try to rent a voting machine from the County Elections Department and, after the votes are counted, smoke signals will be sent up to announce the winner ... ' v " THE CAMPAIGN hoopla's getting wilder as Election Day nears. George Morgan ;had a big parade with a band and clowns and balloons and cowboys and him all, dressed like George Washington ... It was after that parade that someone led the horse into the taven fo ra beer . . C Roy McGuire's out to top 'em all.- Learning a lot from Evel Knievel's stunts, Jie;'s going to jump over Beck's Run the strCam the area's named after in a Cadillac. 'A launching pad is being built ... He chose a Cadillac instead of a horea because you're never sure of a horse. The one that came into the tavern for a beer didn't get one and he kinda messed up the place... And that caused a lot of brooming by George Morgan, who kept his pledge-to run a clean campaign ... ... . :
