PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTF. 3 THURSDAY, MARCH 20.2003 Mf Mir ini I 1 1 I 14 1 I R0CC0 A. DURANTI DENNIS DIBLE Former editor of the Beaver County Times Oaldand restaurateur, decorated veteran ter; and editor of The Sentinel in Lewistown, Mifflin County. He won several awards for his editorials, including top honors at the 2001 Keystone Press Awards and the 1999 West Virginia Press Association awards. A journalism graduate of Kent State University, he began his newspaper career in 19 as a reporter for the Norwalk (Ohio) Reflector.

He was a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and had served on ASNE Readership Research and Future of Newspapers committees. Since 1982, he had frequently lectured at the American Press Institute, a midcareer training headquarters for newspaper industry executives, and Appalachian Lifelong Learners, West Virginia University's Learning in Retirement program. "Denny brought a lot to the entire newspaper," Dominion Post Publisher Dave Raese said. "His opinions in other areas were well-received by other department heads. But his true passion was local news.

He knew that it was the key for survival of our industry." Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown is in charge of arrangements. By The Associated Press Dennis "Denny" Dible, former editor of the Beaver County Times in Bridgewater and The Dominion Post in Morgantown, died Tuesday at his home in Morgantown after a long illness. He was 56. Mr. Dible joined The Dominion Post in late 1997 as managing editor.

He became editor in April 1998. His health forced him to step down. Under his guidance, The Dominion Post added popular local features, like the "Pet of the Week," profiling animals at the county dog pound. After the program began, the adoption rate at the center went up and more than 80 percent of the pets pictured in the paper were adopted, said Kathryn Greever, a former board member of the Mon County Humane Society. Mr.

Dible also established a readers' advisory council that met regularly to discuss the paper and its contents. Before joining The Dominion Post, Mr. Dible had been executive editor of the Beaver County Times; managing editor of The Columbian in Vancouver, managing editor of the Kingsport (Term.) Times-News; city editor of the Sandusky (Ohio) Regis Edgewood Post 743 of the American Legion. He was its commander. His other military honors include a Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and a Silver Star recommendation.

He also was inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Ga. Mr. Duranti's wife cued in 1987. He is survived by two brothers: Bill Duranti of Morgantown, and Rudolph of Wilmington, N.C. In addition to Frank, who lives in Mt.

Lebanon, his surviving sons are Christopher of Rostraver and George of Amherst, Mass. His surviving daughters are Sophea Hei-dinger of Edgewood; Elaena Ma-makos of Churchill; Maria Berta of Forest Hills; Theodora Duranti of Edgewood; and Pamela Miele of O'Hara. He also had 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Thomas L.

Nied Funeral Home, 7441 Washington Swiss-vale. A Trisagion service will be held there at 7:30 tonight. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St Paul Cathedral in Oakland. Mr.

Duranti will be interred beside his wife in Homewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Parish, 718 Franklin Wilkinsburg 15221. Bob Bats Jr. can be reached at bbatz(a or ByBobBatzJr.

Post-Gazette Staff Writer During an extra-busy lunch at Duranti's Park Place Restaurant yesterday, one diner sat and cried for a buddy who was missing from his regular table. Owner Rocco A. Duranti, whose name has graced the Oakland landmark for more than two decades, died Monday at UPMC Shadyside from complications of renal failure. The Edgewood man was 81. A decorated Army veteran of World War II who achieved the rank of colonel, Mr.

Duranti had health problems in recent years and had to nave dialysis three times a week. But he still came to the North Craig Street restaurant almost every day, joining his friends for lunch and sometimes just sitting out front to greet his customers. His son Frank, one of three of his children who run the restaurant, said his father would have been pleased at how many came in yesterday. "This place was pretty much his whole life." Mr. Duranti bought it in 1979.

It was Pittsburgh's largest restaurant when it was opened 20 years earlier, at a cost of $1.5 million, by Vernon Stouffer of Stouffer Foods fame. Mr. Duranti and his wife, Anasta-sia, ran several restaurants before that. He was born in Masontown, Fayette County, and grew up in Morgantown, WVa. He was in the Re serve Officer Training Corps at West Virginia University and, soon after graduating and being commissioned in 1944, went to Europe as a platoon leader in the 289th Infantry, 75th Division.

He was shot during the liberation of Belgium and awarded the Purple Heart with a cluster. It was while stationed in Greece to oversee elections in 1946 that he met Anastasia Sfarnas, who was working as a State Department translator. His first words to her reportedly were, "Do you know where I can get something to eat?" The newlyweds moved back to the United States, where she had family in Washington, D.C. Frank Duranti said, "All the Greeks wanted them to live in Washington, and all the Italians wanted Morgan-town," so the couple picked Pittsburgh to sort of meet everybody halfway. Their first restaurant, started in Wilkinsburg right after the war, was the Seven Seas Dining Room, which they turned into one of the area's first cafeterias.

Then they ran WilMnsburg's Rodgers Dairy, home of his famous beef sandwich called the Wrangler. In 1973, they opened the Arlington Dining Room in Shadyside and ran it until they bought the grand restaurant in what's now the Park Place Condominiums. Mr. Duranti served for 33 years in the Army Reserve, and Duranti's eventually became headquarters of OTHER DEATHS the farm had bred nine Kentucky Derby winners and owned eight. Its best-known horses were thelriple Crown winners Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948), and the sires Bull Lea and Alydar.

Lionel Dakers, 79, who directed the Royal School of Church Music for 16 years, March 10 in London. Mr. Dakers was a stickler for high musical standards and opposed some of the modernizing trends in English church music. Mr. Dakers was organist at Ripon Cathedral from 1954 to 1957, then moved to Exeter Cathedral before his appointment as director of the Royal School of Church Music in 1972.

In 1976, he became director of Hymns Ancient Modern, publisher of some of the most widely used Anglican Henryk de KwiatkowsW, 79, a thoroughbred horse owner and breeder and the owner of the celebrated Calumet Farm since 1992, Monday at his home in Ly-ford Cay in the Bahamas of pneumonia. Mr. de KwiatkowsW (pronounced dee-fee-at-KAWF-skee), a Polish native and a man of Old World charm who spoke 10 languages, made his first fortune by leasing andbro-kering the sale of used planes. His horses included Conquistador Cielo, the 1982 Belmont Stakes winner and North American horse of the year, who was syndicated for $36.4 million, a record at the time. He bought a horse named Danzig for $310,000, retired him after three races because he was unsound and watched him become one of history's most successful sires.
